TUT's main campus is in Pretoria West. Students rent in Philip Nel Park, Kwaggasrand and nearby streets, both in houses let by the room and in newer purpose-built residences with their own transport.
What it costs
-
Shared rooms and rooms in houses are the cheapest in Pretoria. Listings show sharing from about R1,900 to R2,250 per student and single rooms from about R2,200 to R3,000, often including water, electricity, Wi-Fi and sometimes DStv.
-
Purpose-built residences with a daily bus are priced higher: one West City residence with a free daily bus to the TUT main campus lists rooms from about R5,400.
-
The cheapest options are often informal houses. Ask for proof of NSFAS accreditation if you need it, and ask for the landlord's registration details.
Getting around
-
Some listings are described as very close or next to the main campus and some residences run a free daily bus to it. Verify the actual walk time on a map. A listing near the "TUT area" can still be a 30 to 40 minute walk (one residence is listed at 38 minutes' walk from a TVET college).
-
For UP in Hatfield you will need a taxi, bus or Gautrain connection, which is a long trip.
Safety
- Houses close to campus are popular, but the surrounding streets are mixed. Students in Pretoria have spoken publicly about safety around TUT's wider area. Visit during the day and at night, and look at how the property is secured (gate, burglar bars, lighting, who else lives there).
What's nearby
TUT main campus, local shops and taxi ranks, and the Pretoria CBD (short drive).
Who it suits
TUT students on a tight budget, or those who want to live close enough to walk.
